Vanessa Cowie shares what International Women’s Day means to her.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we are sharing stories from our inspirational women on what the day means to them.

We caught up with Vanessa Cowie to find out more about what International Women’s Day means to her.

An honest and unedited blog entry from Vanessa Cowie, Consultant Anaesthetist

1) Which women inspire you the most?

Rather than single individuals I would prefer to highlight the countless women I have been influenced and inspired by over the years. These are women who work hard and aim high, and achieve great things while balancing many other commitments.

2.    What message do you think is the most important for young women thinking about a career in healthcare?

My experience is that the NHS is a supportive and inclusive place to work. As an anaesthetist I am fortunate to work with many women in a huge variety of roles. My message is - if you want to do it, go for it: you will be supported to do so.

3.    What are your hopes for the future of gender diversity in the workplace?

I would like to see women continue to achieve great things in the NHS. There are no reasons why women should not be aiming for any roles, including senior and leadership positions. Equality and flexibility are absolutely possible.
