NHS biomedical scientist raises over £500 for dementia care in memory of family friends

A former Croydon Health Services staff member has smashed her £400 fundraising target for this year’s Move for Good charity walk, raising £506 in support of Croydon Health Charity’s Dementia Garden Appeal.
Micsha Costa (pictured above, left) is a biomedical scientist now working at St George’s Hospital, who joined 70 Croydon staff, patients and local residents for the 10km community walk earlier this September, fundraising for a cause close to her heart.
Speaking on why she took part in the fundraising walk, Micsha said:
“I’ve always loved charity work and dementia is which is an important cause for me - and it was for Croydon hospital which has a special place in my heart - this is where I started my career,”
“Many of my parents’ close friends, who became like family to me growing up, have been affected by this devastating condition. Seeing people I once knew so well slowly lose their memories is incredibly sad and I wanted to do something to help.”
The Dementia Garden Appeal will create a peaceful, therapeutic space at Croydon University Hospital where patients living with dementia can relax, reconnect and share precious moments with their families and loved ones.
Micsha continued: “Having a calm, welcoming garden can make such a difference to families.
“A space like this can help reduce stress, spark memories and help families feel closer during what can be an emotional journey.”
Micsha has been sharing her fundraising page across social media to raise both money and awareness. She added that taking part in events like Move for Good is about more than just raising money:
“Not everyone understands what dementia means for patients and families, so by talking about it and raising awareness, we can encourage more support for projects like this.”
