Work begins on new dementia garden at Croydon University Hospital thanks to Croydon Health Charity funding | News

Construction has begun on a brand-new dementia garden at Croydon University Hospital this week, marking an exciting milestone in creating a more supportive and therapeutic environment for patients living with dementia.

Funded by Croydon Health Charity, the garden will provide a safe, accessible and calming outdoor space where patients, families and carers can spend time together, enjoy nature and benefit from the proven wellbeing advantages of spending time outdoors.

Designed with the needs of people living with dementia in mind, the garden will feature sensory planting, accessible pathways, comfortable seating and carefully considered landscaping to encourage relaxation, reminiscence and social interaction. The project forms part of the charity's ongoing commitment to enhancing the experience of patients receiving care across Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.

Sharlung Bovell, Lead Dementia Nurse at Croydon University Hospital, said:

"We know how important access to outdoor spaces can be for people living with dementia. A thoughtfully designed garden can help reduce anxiety, support orientation, encourage gentle activity and provide opportunities for meaningful conversations with loved ones. It will give our patients a safe and welcoming place to enjoy fresh air and engage with nature, which can have a positive impact on their wellbeing during their hospital stay. We are excited to see work beginning on a project that will bring such lasting benefits to our patients and their families."

The start of building work represents the culmination of months of planning and fundraising, with several staff, supporters and donors helping to make the vision a reality.

The building works are expected to be completed in early Autumn, after which patients and staff will able to enjoy brand new garden which will be valuable resource in supporting the care overall wellbeing of the Trust's dementia patients.
